GREAT NOTION’s Jazzy Idea defeats the big guns at Laurel!

JazzyWhat can a 3-year-old filly do? If she’s JAZZY IDEA, she takes on older boys, including two millionaires, kicks her heels and crushes them and her own course record! The daughter of GREAT NOTION dismissed the likes of local Maryland legend Ben’s Cat and Heros Reward to win the $150,000 Laurel Dash S. at Laurel Park on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Rated off the quick pace set by Ju Jitsu Jax and Ben’s Cat, JAZZY IDEA got clear sailing under Elvis Trujillo in the stretch and ran down Ben’s Cat to win by three-quarters of a length. Her final time for 6 furlongs on the firm turf was 1:07.29, bettering the mark of 1:07.45 she set when taking the Jameela S. in September.

Bred, owned and trained by Edwin Merryman, JAZZY IDEA recorded her fifth stakes win of the year, and increased her lifetime bankroll to $449,000 from 18 starts. She has made a dozen starts this season, finishing first or second in nine while winning at four different tracks.

“I’m speechless,” said Merryman. “Maybe I should have run her next week [in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint]. Her style of just sitting off the pace suited this race perfect today. I left it up to Elvis to go whenever he wanted. She’s 3-for-3 on Laurel turf now and before today Ben’s Cat was 5-for-5. She is far and above the best horse I have ever had my hands on.”
