NOT FOR LOVE’s 2-year-old daughter MYSTIC LOVE ventured to Florida for turf action, and found it in the $100,000 Dania Beach S. at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Dec. 15. Facing nine colts and geldings, she raced close to the pace while saving ground under Elvis Trujillo in the one-mile turf stakes, spurted clear as the field raced down the stretch and held off a late rally by even-money favorite Charming Kitten to win by a half length. The only filly in the race, MYSTIC LOVE rewarded her supporters with a $34 win ticket. And she rewarded her owner, John Davison, with a $60,000 payday. In getting her third win in four starts, she boosted her total earnings to $174,760.
“We believed in her. It was more that we really didn’t want to go a mile and a sixteenth for her first time going two turns,” said Jessica Campitelli, who handles the training duties for the Campitelli stable in Florida. “So we chose to run against the boys.”
Bred in Maryland by Dark Hollow Farm out of the Dixie Union mare Memories of Mystic, MYSTIC LOVE got her first stakes win in the five and a half-furlong $150,000 Selima S. at Laurel Park on Oct. 27 with Francis Campitelli listed as trainer.
“She’s always trained like the longer the better, really,” said Francis Campitelli, who joined his wife in the winner’s circle. “Her getting the distance wasn’t a great surprise. I was more surprised she was able to win at five and a half.” Her next target will likely be the $100,000 Sweetest Chant, a mile turf stakes for fillies, on Jan. 27.
NOT FOR LOVE is the leading sire in Maryland in 2012 on the general and 2-year-old sires lists. He has four juvenile stakes horses, who have earned nearly $600,000 this year, including Maryland Million Lassie winner CLASSY COCO.
