Jump Start Colt Takes Stakes At Saratoga

iBurning Sands Stable's San Pablo wore down Isn't He Perfect in the stretch to win the $100,000 Birdstone Stakes for older horses at Saratoga Race Course on August 2nd.

Covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.68, San Pablo finished three lengths in front of Isn't He Perfect.

The Jump Start colt trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez had picked up minor awards in his previous two starts in graded company. He ran second in the Grade 3 Excelsior at Aqueduct before running fourth behind Whitney runners Rule and Flat Out in the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup in New Jersey. Prior to those two starts, San Pablo won a pair of ungraded races at Aqueduct this past winter and ran second by a nose in a third.

San Pablo has now won 6-of-11 lifetime starts, and has finished out of the money only once in his career. Pletcher indicated a return to the graded ranks wouldn’t be out of the question for the colt’s next start.

“I thought he ran quite well today,” Pletcher said. “Who knows? Maybe we’ll see him in a race like the Woodward.”

JUMP START is the leading sire in the Northeast in 2012 by number of stakes winners, and his runners have earned more than $2.5 million this year. The son of A.P. INDY has 28 career stakes winners and lifetime progeny earnings in excess of $23 million.
