Jazzy-Idea-01Edwin Merryman's Jazzy Idea was selected as the 2012 Maryland-based Horse of the Year by the members of the Maryland Racing Media Association in voting conducted at the first of two bi-annual meetings held by the organization.

Jazzy Idea, a daughter of Great Notion out of the Dixieland Band mare, Jazz Band, won six of 12 starts, including five stakes races and earned nearly $400,000 last year at age three and she concluded her campaign with victories in the Maryland Million Oaks and the Laurel
Owned, bred and trained by Merryman, Jazzy Idea edged Ben's Cat by one vote for the honor, a fitting result considering that she rallied to defeat Ben's Cat to capture the Laurel Dash on the turf establishing a new course record in the final start of her three-year-old campaign.

Jazzy Idea will be formally recognized as the Maryland-based Horse of the Year by the Maryland Racing Media Association on Saturday, February 23 in a trophy presentation just prior to the 22nd renewal of the $125,000 Maryland Racing Media Association Handicap for fillies and mares at Laurel Park.
