Pennsylvania’s favorite son, SMARTY JONES, is also one hot sire!
The horse who captured the first two legs of the Triple Crown while undefeated also captured the hearts of millions of fans, many in his home state of Pennsylvania. After standing his first six years in Kentucky, SMARTY JONES’s return to the Keystone State for the 2011 breeding season was reason to rejoice, for a multitude of reasons.
Every year SMARTY JONES’s stud record gets stronger. In 2011, he was the leading U.S. sire by international earnings standing outside of Kentucky, with just four crops to race! His sensational 2011 season saw his runners amass more than $5.5 million worldwide and included Japanese star KEIAI GERBERA, who surpassed lifetime earnings of $2 million during the year; speedster SUNRISE SMARTY, winner of the Fall Highweight H.-G3; Gr. 3 Las Flores S. winner and Gr. 1-placed GILDED GEM, and 3-year-olds CONCEALED IDENTITY and ROGUE ROMANCE.
SMARTY JONES surpassed the $5 million mark again in 2012, and in 2013 tied for first by number of stakes winners among active sires in the region! With six crops to race, he is the sire of 45 stakes horses, and nearly half his 23 stakes winners won in graded/group company. He sired 17 stakes horses in 2013, led by Gr.1 Triple Bend H. winner CENTRALINTELIGENCE, champion daughter BETTER LIFE, an earner of $1.6 million who swept home a Gr.1 winner in Singapore, and daughter NIKKIS SMARTYPANTS, a graded winner in Canada.
SMARTY JONES proved his determination time and time again on the race track. He won both his starts at 2, including the Pennsylvania Nursery S. by an astonishing 15 lengths. At 3, he became the nation’s darling. He was awarded the Eclipse Award for his division by winning his first six starts of the year, highlighted by a sensational performance in the Kentucky Derby-G1 and an incredible 111⁄2 length drubbing in the Preakness S.-G1. He proved tough in what would be his final career start, a second-place finish in the Belmont S.-G1. SMARTY JONES won seven stakes and earned $7,613,155 in a nine-start career.
A son of world-record setting miler ELUSIVE QUALITY, SMARTY JONES is out of multiple stakes winner I’LL GET ALONG, a daughter of champion sprinter SMILE. He descends in direct female line to one of the most prolific and important broodmares in the stud book, *LA TROIENNE, through the line of STRIKING.
SMARTY JONES’s first Pennsylvania-sired foals are 2-year-olds in 2014.
